Basically a record company's function is very similar to a movie studios job as being the the brand behind the movie or in this case the band, making sure that a respected bands music is published with promotional material and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos basically being a guardian angel for the band directing them and helping them with getting their music out into the world for a "small fee".
What does a music publishing company do?
The role of a music publisher involves finding upcoming songwriters and bestow them the guidance to progress in the music industry while also finding the facilities they need to produce music in the process.
What is a plugger & what is their role.
A plugger is essentially a musical marketer who pitch compositions to recording artists and record label teams looking to make a hit out of the songs they pitch.
What does a music management company do?
Essentially a music management company provide opportunities for bands, songwriter or music artists allow them to get one of their song to be a top 10 hit or producing a opportunity to play big gigs like a performance at Glastonbury, Summerfest and other large festivals.

The difference is that with major record companies is that you are forced to do what the major record company asks though if your work ends up doing well you can be entitled to some creative freedom, since your work makes the company money and they value that most overall.
When comparing the difference between the major record companies you should always keep in mind that though the smaller record companies allow more freedom when the bigger record companies seem as if you are selling your soul to the devil, the big companies do provide better equipment.

Mute Records are a independent record label who operate without the funding of bigger companies and these independent labels started as producers and distributor of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Today, music appearing on indie labels is often referred to as indie music, or more specifically by genre, such as indie hip-hop.
